Learn to Hunt Waterfowl: Biology, Waterfowl ID,

and Waterfowl Gear

Located at the Olofson Shooting Range 

Join the Capitol Callers Chapter of Delta Waterfowl and Iowa DNR for an evening of waterfowl basics. In part one of this learn to hunt series, new hunters will learn the basics of waterfowl hunting from some of Iowa's most passionate duck hunters. Course topics for night one include Waterfowl Biology, Waterfowl ID, and Basic Waterfowl Gear. This class will be held mostly indoors. Part two of this series will be taught September 26th. If students want to participate in both, they must sign up for both. Attendance to both is not mandatory.

Thaddeus Rivers Waterfowl Day 

9/23/2018 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM 

Located at the Riverton Wildlife Unit

This class is an introductory to waterfowl hunting for ages 12 and up to include identification, laws, waterfowl equipment and hunting techniques and clay bird shooting stations. A list of mentor hunters with be handed out to those youth interested in setting up a mentored duck hunt for the southern zone youth waterfowl season the following weekend. Coordination for the mentor hunts will be by the youth hunter and mentor. If adult participants are interested in a mentored hunt, they can be coordinated for the following seasons.

Mentored Youth Waterfowl Hunt 

9/29/2018 from 5:00 AM to 11:00 AM 

Located at Chichaqua Longhouse

Inviting youth 12-15 to join learn the thrill of waterfowl hunting in a safe and controlled environment. Polk County Conservation is hosting a $10 Mentored Youth Waterfowl Hunt. Registration closes September 24, 2018. 
Hunter’s Breakfast served in the Longhouse before the hunt. Don’t be late, you don’t want to miss this delicious start to your day! Two youth will be teamed with an experienced waterfowl hunter and a Conservation Officer to serve as mentors. Youth and mentors will be assigned to blinds in the 88-acre controlled waterfowl hunting area at Chichaqua Bottoms Greenbelt  Mentors will provide dogs, decoys, calling skills and guidance. Youth need to bring waders, firearms, and ammunition (These can be provided by sponsors if youth do not have. Ammunition must be steel shot). Door prizes will be provided.

Mentored Pheasant Hunt

9/29/2018 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM 

Located at Chichaque Bottoms Greenbelt

Free Youth Pheasant Hunt is sponsored by Story County Pheasants Forever & Iowa DNR. The Hunt will begin at Chichaqua Bottoms Greenbelt at 9:00. Youth Hunters 11-15 years old should have Hunter Education or completed one season of school trap shooting team or club.
