Cabela’s to Sponsor National Hunting and Fishing Day

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—Congress formalized it. Presidents proclaim it. And Cabela’s continues to sponsor it. The World’s Foremost Outfitter for hunters, shooters and anglers has renewed its longstanding support of National Hunting and Fishing Day, set for Sept. 25, 2010.
Special celebrations and public events on and around that date are being planned at all 30 Cabela’s stores nationwide. Many conservation organizations will also be promoting programs in stores. Visit for details.
“National Hunting and Fishing Day is a great opportunity to share with the public not only the excitement surrounding outdoor recreation, but also the tremendous conservation and economic benefits provided by America’s hunters and anglers,” said Tommy Millner, Cabela’s chief executive officer. “We’re honored to be a part of this decades-old celebration.”
Sponsorship from Cabela’s supports public education campaigns by Wonders of Wildlife, the “Official Home of NHF Day” in Springfield, Mo. The museum is working to build public understanding and appreciation for hunting, angling and conservation.
Congress formalized NHF Day in 1972 as a public reminder that conservation in America depends on funding and leadership from hunters and anglers. Every U.S. President from Richard M. Nixon through Barack Obama has lent support by officially proclaiming the annual commemoration, always held the fourth Saturday in September.
Denise Wagner of Wonders of Wildlife said, “Through licenses and special taxes, hunters, shooters and anglers provide most of the funding for state conservation agencies today, and the results benefit all citizens who appreciate healthy fish, wildlife and habitat. Thanks to Cabela’s for supporting our work to spread this important message.”

The entire USA Shooting Team is serving as honorary chair for NHF Day 2010. With 103 Olympic medals for rifle, pistol and shotgun marksmanship, the U.S. excels in few sports more than shooting. Only track and field, swimming, diving, wrestling and boxing have been more prolific medal producers for Americans. In fact, shooting ranks ahead of gymnastics, figure skating, volleyball and more than 30 other Olympic sports. Most members of the current USA Shooting Team are active hunters and anglers, blending a passion for the outdoors with winning on the world stage.
In addition to Cabela’s, the growing list of sponsors for NHF Day 2010 includes Wonders of Wildlife, National Shooting Sports Foundation, Bass Pro Shops, Smith & Wesson, Sportsman Channel, Realtree, Cabela’s,, Yamaha, Pope and Young Club, Izaak Walton League of America and Academy Sports + Outdoors.
