Smith & Wesson to Sponsor National Hunting and Fishing Day

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—Legendary firearms maker Smith & Wesson is the newest sponsor of National Hunting and Fishing Day, set for Sept. 26, 2009.

“A special excise tax on new firearms is one of the primary funding mechanisms for conservation in America, and Smith & Wesson is proud of our role in making America’s great outdoors a model for the entire world,” said Paul Pluff, director of marketing for Smith & Wesson.

In 1972, Congress formalized NHF Day as an annual celebration to remind the public that conservation depends on funding and leadership from hunters and anglers. Along with hunting and fishing licenses, excise taxes on firearms, ammunition, bows, arrows, rods and reels generate $100,000 every 30 minutes—totaling more than $1.75 billion per year—for fish, wildlife and habitat. The results benefit all Americans who appreciate wildlife and wild places.

Presidents from Richard M. Nixon through George W. Bush have issued official proclamations of support for National Hunting and Fishing Day, one of the most effective grassroots campaigns ever undertaken to promote traditional outdoor sports.

Smith & Wesson’s sponsorship supports Wonders of Wildlife, the official home of National Hunting and Fishing Day. The museum, based in Springfield, Mo., is working to deliver Congress’s message throughout the year.

“We’re proud that Smith & Wesson has renewed its sponsorship in NHF Day. Their support is helping us develop some new tools for educating the public about hunting and fishing. Along with all of our sponsors, we’ll be announcing those new tools very soon,” said Denise Wagner of Wonders of Wildlife.

Country music star Luke Bryan is the honorary chairman for NHF Day 2009.

The growing list of sponsors for National Hunting and Fishing Day includes Wonders of Wildlife, National Shooting Sports Foundation, Bass Pro Shops, The Sportsman Channel, Realtree,, Hunting Heritage Trust, Cabela’s, Boone and Crockett Club, Smith & Wesson, Field & Stream/Outdoor Life, Woolrich and Yamaha.
